A Mosquito-borne virus commonly found in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. The West Nile Virus has been
found in the United States as well. It is transmitted to people and animals through the bite of an
infected mosquito. The mosquito acquires the infection by feeding on an infected bird with the virus
in its blood.

People over 50 have a higher chance of getting sick when infected with WNV. Being outside: the more time
you spend outside, the greater the chance you have of being bitten by an infected mosquito.
Protect yourself by taking the following precautions:

Eliminate all sources of standing water on your property because standing water provides a place
for mosquitoes to develop
- Avoid spending time outside when mosquitoes are most active, especially at dawn and dusk
- Use DEET insect repellent according to label instructions
