While we try to come to grip with national tragedies like the Columbia Space
Shuttle disaster, let’s not forget our children. Whether our grandchildren
or children, young people can have a very hard time comprehending these
events that sadden us all. Depending on the child’s age, reactions may range
from fear to self-blame. There is now clear evidence from research regarding
September 11 that children are traumatized by watching the images on T.V.
One of the steps parents can take is monitoring what their children are
watching. Many experts recommend that very young children not see any T.V.
coverage of traumatic events. Older children should watch with an adult
present to answer questions and prevent repetitive viewing of a traumatic
event. Open channels of communication and encourage children to speak their
feelings. Reassure them of their safety. Allow them to “help” by planning a
memorial or writing letters of support. Watch for signs of behavior change
that may indicate signs of post – traumatic stress. If you are concerned,
visit your pediatrician or family physician for advice. Let’s all of us in
Sutter County value our children’s health and well being.
