    Play! Play! Play!
Play! Play! Play! We all want what’s best for our child, so take the time everyday to PLAY with him or her. Playing helps to stimulate and develop your child’s brain, so they can grow smarter, stronger, healthier, and happier. As soon as babies are born, they begin to learn about their environment. Their brain grows very quickly during the first year of life and a great way to learn is to play!

    Gardening with Children
Gardening with Children By Karrie Efird RD, WIC Nutritionist

There are many learning opportunities for children in the garden. It can be learning colors, shapes and scents for 3 year-olds or a science project on the plant cycle for older children. Encourage your child to be involved in all aspects of gardening from planning to harvest. Children are more likely to eat vegetables that they grow than from the store. Here are some tips to encourage gardening:
    • Designate an area for the child's garden
    • Create a theme such as a Pizza Garden planting herbs and vegetables you would find on a pizza
    • Let the child choose what will be planted in his/her special area
    • Purchase child sized tools such as a rake, hoe, trowel, watering can or cultivator
    • Read books with the child about vegetables and farming
It's important to know there are a few plants which are toxic to children and animals if ingested. Teach your child to check with you before eating something straight out of the garden. If you are unsure whether or not a plant is toxic, please contact your local nursery. Some toxic plants to avoid are:

Caster Bean, Rosary Pea, Rhubarb (the leaves), Angel's Trumpet, Foxglove, Morning Glory, St. Johnswort or Sweet Alyssum.
