The County Assessor is an elected official and constitutional officer who is charged by law with the responsibility of independent oversight and preparation of the annual local property assessments, from which property taxes are derived.
As of January 1 each year, the Assessor's Office locates, inventories and establishes values for all taxable property within Sutter County. The laws governing the assessment of property are included in the State of California Revenue and Taxation Code and they are complex, ever-changing and often perplexing. All property within the county is classified as either real or personal, state assessed or locally assessed, and taxable or non-taxable. The Assessor compiles this specific data into the assessment roll which must be submitted annually to the Sutter County Auditor-Controller prior to July 1.
