Before a citizen can vote in an election you must first be registered to vote in the County that you reside. Here are some answers to common questions about voter registration.
Who may register and vote?
A person is entitled to register to vote if they are:
- A U.S. Citizen
- A resident of California
- Not in prison or on parole for the conviction of a felony
- At least 18 years of age on the date of the election
California election law denies the right to vote to persons who have been determined mentally incompetent.
How and where to register to vote
To register to vote, a person needs to complete and sign a Voter Registration Form and mail it to the Elections Division of the County Clerk-Recorder-Registrar of Voters. These forms are pre-addressed and postage paid. (Some forms carry the Secretary of State's address in Sacramento or the address of another county - these forms can also be used).

How to change name, address, political party
If you:
- Have married and/or changed your name or;
- Moved within the County and need to change your address or;
- Wish to change your political party;
You may simply complete another Voter Registration Card and mail it to the Sutter County Election, 1435 Veterans Memorial Circle, Yuba City, CA 95993 and your registration will be updated by our office to reflect the change.
Deadline to register for an election
You must be registered at least 15 days prior to an election in order to vote in the election. Once you are registered, you will remain on the rolls and be eligible to vote until you move out of the county or become ineligible. If you fail to vote in any election you will not be deleted from the voter files.
