The Library offers services designed to benefit the whole community. Children enjoy a wide variety of resources and exciting programs throughout the year. There are also regular events designed for teens as well as adults. A widely recognized Literacy Services Program offers classes for Adult Learners in Adult Basic Education, English as a Second Language, Citizenship, and much more. An active Friends of the Library group provides enthusiastic support through volunteers and fundraising.

Sacramento Public Library System Integration

Sutter County Library systems are integrated with the Sacramento Public Library system for online catalog searches, account management and library computer reservations.

 

ZipBooks

The Zip Books program provides library users with speedy access to books that are not available at their local libraries. A patron simply requests the item, the library purchases it from Amazon, and the book is shipped directly to the patron’s home. When finished, the patron returns it to the library and the library adds it to the collection.

This program was supported in whole or in part by funding provided by the State of California, administered by the California State Library.

The California Digital Newspaper Collection

This digital newspaper collection currently contains 531,301 issues comprising 5,705,437 pages and 39,566,623 articles. This collection is free and supports reading and research of California’s rich history and communities.

 

 

Driving Tests.org, a company dedicated to driver safety and education, is offering free Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) practice tests to library patrons. The service includes free tests specifically based on the California's DMV materials. It is the only site of its kind to include accessibility tools that allow users to hear selections read aloud, converted to MP3s, pages translated into other languages, and magnified text.

Library Patron Code of Conduct

Below are some basic guidelines that will help everyone enjoy Sutter County Library as a great community asset.

  • Library staff is here to serve you in your pursuit of knowledge and information. We hope that you might also enjoy finding books, movies or use of the internet to be entertaining and rewarding.
  • The library is a county department and will follow policies and procedures put in place by the Sutter County Board of Supervisors and County Administration. Library staff will not engage in arguments or debates concerning these rules.
  • Rules governing reservations and time limits are in keeping with what is typical in most libraries and are designed to accommodate as many people as possible in an equitable manner. To avoid confusion and inequity, library staff will not change rules based on individual preferences.
  • Individuals using library facilities and attending library programs are expected to comply with all library policies and directions from staff. Conduct is unacceptable if it impedes other patrons from enjoyment of library resources or threatens injury to library patrons or library resources.
  • Please enjoy your library experience by showing respect to others. Consideration should be given to those who prefer social distancing and some measure of privacy.
  • In order to maintain a peaceful and valuable library experience for all, those engaged in loud or argumentative speech or behaving in a threatening manner will be asked to leave.

The following describes in greater detail the conduct expected while using the library:

The library is a community resource which promotes lifelong learning by providing access to books, movies, the internet, programs and classes. The library property is not to be used as a space for:

Childcare for unattended children

Sleeping or Camping

Soliciting or selling merchandise or services

Sexual activities – including but not limited to, unwanted or inappropriate touching, advances, harassment or indecent exposure

Use of alcohol, tobacco, or controlled substances

  • The library is a county department and will follow policies and procedures put in place by the Sutter County Board of Supervisors and County Administration. Library staff will not engage in arguments or debates concerning these rules.

Although the library seeks to welcome all, there is also an expectation that library users show respect and courtesy to library staff and others using the library. In addition to policies adopted by the Sutter County Board of Supervisors, the following library procedures will be followed:

Library staff will not engage in arguments with the public concerning policies and procedures. Questions or concerns may be addressed to the Director of Library Services in writing.

Members of the public wishing to engage staff in loud or threatening arguments will be asked to leave.

  • Rules governing reservations and time limits are in keeping with what is typical in most libraries and are designed to accommodate as many people as possible in an equitable manner. To avoid confusion, library staff will not change rules based on individual preferences.

Library rules are based on research of common practices of libraries across the country and are not aimed to deny services to a particular individual or group of people. The library and the county seek to serve the public with equity and strive to include all. In order to maintain efficiency in services to a diverse community, standard rules are used that may not always suit the needs of an individual at any given time. Library staff will follow these procedures:

Patrons’ reservations will be honored, and time limits enforced.

Library staff should not be expected to change rules or show preference to another patron by adjusting these rules. Most limits are controlled by preset computer software that is not easily changed by staff.

Library staff will not engage in arguments over time limits. Those refusing to comply will be asked to leave the property and may jeopardize the right to make future reservations.

  • Individuals using library facilities and attending library programs are expected to comply with all library policies and directions from staff. Conduct is unacceptable if it impedes other patrons from enjoyment of library resources or threatens injury to library patrons or library resources.

By entering the library property, individuals agree to conducting themselves according to standards of mutual respect. The following are required in order to remain on the property:

Library visitors must be clothed appropriately and in accordance with local ordinance. Those with bare feet, shirtless or otherwise exposed will not be admitted.

Use of bicycles, skateboards, shopping carts and any other equipment that could cause injury to others is not permitted in the building. Skateboards may be carried but must be kept off the floor.

Drinks with lids are allowed. Reasonable snacks are also allowed. However, meals and foods that are messy may not be brought in or consumed in the library. Exceptions may be made for Library programs that serve food as part of approved activities.

Animals are not allowed in the library. Only service animals defined as compliant with ADA standards may be allowed.

  • Please enjoy your library experience by showing respect to others. Consideration should be given to those who prefer social distancing and some measure of privacy.

Although the library is a public space, it is also a shared space that requires those using it to respect others. A diverse community represents a wide variety of beliefs, customs, ideas and practices. Library users should not seek to impose, uninvited, their own practices on others. Proper social distancing should be practiced.

Excessive use of scented products or lack of hygiene may also infringe on other’s enjoyment of the library. In some instances, library or security staff may find it necessary to request that a visitor address this problem.

  • In order to maintain a peaceful and valuable library experience for all, those engaged in loud or argumentative speech or behaving in a threatening manner will be asked to leave.

Those engaged in loud phone calls, arguments or shouting will be asked to leave the building.

Threatening or harassing language, gestures or actions are not allowed.

Minor infractions may result in a visitor being asked to leave. In more serious cases or repeat offenses, an incident report will be shared with Sutter County Risk Management and after review, may result in having library privileges revoked temporarily or a ban from library property.
