No transaction can be conducted to the mutual satisfaction of the parties involved unless each is assured the other is fair and honest. The basis of fair and honest trade is, and always has, rested on the use of accurate weights and measures.

The Department’s Weights & Measures Division is responsible for local enforcement of California Weights & Measures laws and regulations. These laws and regulations were established to provide for a fair and equitable marketplace. The Division performs field activities in the following Weights & Measures programs:

• Registered Service Agency
• Weighing & Measuring Devices
• Quantity Control
• Weighmaster
• Petroleum

Notify the Sealer

California law requires that every person who uses, or intends to use, a weighing or measuring device for commercial purpose shall cause them to be sealed by the sealer before using the device.  Any person having sold, rented, leased, loaned, installed, repaired, or adjusted a weighing or measuring device must notify the county sealer within 24 hours.  For further information, please refer to California Business and Professions Code, Division 5, Chapter 5, Section 12501.1 and 12515.

• If you are an owner or operator of a weighing or measuring device intended to be used for commercial purposes, click here to notify the sealer about the device(s).
• If you are installing a weighing or measuring device for another business, and you are not a Registered Service Agency, click here to notify the sealer about the device(s).
• If you are a Registered Service Agency and have made repairs, adjustments, or installed a new commercial device, click here to submit a Placed in Service Report.
