Can I report a crime to the District Attorney’s Office?
In most cases, a crime must be reported to the law enforcement agency that has jurisdiction over the city or county where the crime occurred. For example, if a crime occurred in the city of Yuba City, the crime should be reported to the Yuba City Police Department. If a crime occurred in the county of Sutter, the crime should be reported to the Sutter Sheriff’s Department.
I am the victim of a crime and I want to drop charges. Can I do this?
Crimes are charged by the District Attorney’s Office on behalf of the People of the State of California, not on behalf of any particular victim. The decision to file or to drop charges in any criminal prosecution can only be made by an attorney in the District Attorney’s Office. A victim’s wishes will be considered, but the final determination as to whether or not charges will be filed or dismissed rests with the D.A.’s Office.

I received a subpoena from the D.A.’s Office to appear as a witness in a criminal case. What do I do if I am unable to appear on the date stated in the subpoena?
A subpoena is a court order that must be obeyed. If you have a date conflict, you should contact the deputy district attorney handling the case before the appearance date and discuss your conflict. You may call the main office at (530) 822-7330 to find out what deputy district attorney will be handling your case. If you do not appear, without receiving permission from the deputy district attorney, a warrant can be issued for your arrest.
