WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY SERVICES

• Assessment by staff with expertise in psychiatric emergency services
• Determination of best level of care needs including but not limited to:
  • Crisis Support on an outpatient basis
  • Support/Safety planning
  • Problem Solving
  • Referrals to community resources and supports
  • if legal criteria met, initiation of 5150 involuntary hold
  • if criteria met, voluntary or involuntary admission to inpatient psychiatric hospital

W&I 5150 APPLICATION CRITERIA

As a result of a mental health disorder

• Danger to Self
• Danger to Others
• Gravely Disabled (unable to provide food, shelter, clothing or provide for basic needs)...

CONDITIONS THAT DO NOT MEET W&I 5150 APPLICATION CRITERIA IN THE ABSENCE OF A PRIMARY MENTAL HEALTH DISORDER

• Intoxication from ingestion of alcohol or under the influence of illegal drugs
• Organic brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Traumatic Brain Injury or Intellectual Disability

WHAT IF YOU OR YOUR LOVED ONE DOES NOT MEET CRITERIA FOR HOSPITALIZATION?

• Outpatient services may be a better fit for you or your loved ones needs

Behavioral health conditions can be both short term or chronic and can stabilize and improve with treatment. This means that you or your loved one may need to seek services for a short time or consistently over a long period of time. It is important to note that individuals with behavioral health conditions can and do recover and that there is hope for recovery.
